Welcome to boof, Jessica's Version
It’s 2016. Bella – a washed-up 2000s celebrity heiress – reinvents herself as a wellness influencer and Lucy – Bella’s overworked & chronically ill personal assistant – discovers her place in the world. As crystals are cleansed, and chaos unfolds, an unlikely friendship forms between them…
Boof is a mockumentary web series about wellness culture, work, friendship, women’s health and mental health, ambition, shame, and the performance of being “well.”
I started writing it in 2019, after graduating from drama school and working with a writers’ collective. At first, I thought I was making a satire about wellness culture: the language of transformation, the performance of healing, the strange ways people package pain into content, products, and personal brands.
Over time, the project became more personal. It began to touch live questions in my own life: my relationship with my body, sex, visibility, ageing, work, women’s wellbeing, and the pressure to appear productive and desirable inside systems that often make people unwell.
Making Boof has also been a practical lesson in independent production. I am a working artist making work with other working artists, often without secure funding or a fixed production period. Eventually, I realised the way forward was to build it slowly, one shoot day at a time.
The work is not separate from the person making it. For me, Boof has become a way of thinking through: what happens when ‘self-improvement’ becomes socially imposed hoops you have to jump through to be considered a ‘good’ woman, when wellness becomes performance, and why being visible begins to feel both necessary and dangerous.
It’s cringe comedy at its most healing. 🙏✨
Welcome.
